Introduction

In response to the demands for internationalization and globalization, this department aims to develop international manpower, and to contribute to an expected multinational interest between Korea and Japan, by means of expanding the number of students possessing a systematic and integrated understanding of Japanese language and literature.

In addition, the educational objective of our department is not only to foster academic experts who have international knowledge and perception, but also to train people with diverse values, who are going to be required both domestically and internationally in the global era of the 21st century.

Advantageous minor or double major

There is no doubt that Japan and Korea have been mutually related and co-adapted historically, culturally and socially. Therefore, our students can be encouraged to choose the minor or double major in Korean Studies, in order to take up opportunities to compare the two languages, literatures, histories and cultures. In addition, in order to have various further opportunities to study, they may also be encouraged to select another major, such as Political Science, Public Administration, Economics and Finance, Management, International Economics and Business, while majoring in our program.

Active Overseas Exchange

Every year, several students will have opportunities to study abroad - especially in our affiliated schools, such as Nara University and Oita University, with scholarship offered by MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science &Technology - Japan). In addition, a lot of students will go abroad as exchange students of our other sister colleges (there are more than 20 sister Universities including Shizuoka, Oita, Hiroshima, and Gunma University) for cultural and language courses.

Job Fields

When examining our former graduates students and their current activities, over 100 alumni work as Japanese teachers in high school, and others have been engaged as Japanese instructors in academies and companies, moreover, some alumni work as researchers in industrial research centers, some work as translators for the military and some serve with large conglomerates and public institutions. Certifications from this department, in short, will guarantee diverse employment opportunities, especially as secondary school teachers, interpreter, translators, tour guides, and so forth.

    ELEMENTARY JAPANESE LANGUAGE(1)
    The target audience of Basic Japanese (1) is students who have never learned Japanese language before. The purpose of this course is to let student learn a Japanese alphabetical system called Hiragana/Katakana. Next, this class will give students an introduction to Japanese grammar and conversation skills. At the end of semester, students are expected to have a basic understanding of Japanese language as well as culture.

    SEMINAR FOR ACADEMIC LIFE
    1. Summary of the course This course is to assist university freshmen in CRM designing to adapt university life well through the instruction and counselling of supervising professor. (This course is composed of self analysis, personality type test, career research, instruction for the success of university life, career plan and direction setting, CRM designing method and CRM designing. The course should be teaching in classes of the students by supervising professor.) 2. Course objectives This course is to motivate the students before the mid term exam and provide students with self analysis, personality type test (MBTI or TCI) and career research (YAT test). Also, this course shall has a plan to instruct the students to enhance the efficiency of university life through career and time management. In addition, this course is to make a chance for the students to have practical assistance to university life by providing study method, report designing strategy and the information on academic system and various kinds of internal programs of the university. After the mid term exam, the students will be instructed to set the direction of career designing through continuous counselling of supervising professor and the students will be able to establish CRM designing and execution plan.

    SOFTWARE AND AI
    Software and AI (Artificial Intelligence) course aims to educate the basic concepts of software and computational thinking to use them in various applications. It allows students of various majors to experience the core technologies of the 4th industrial revolution, such as big data, machine learning, and AI. It also introduces various applications of AI so that students can easily apply these technologies to their field of study. This course classifies the lecture types into three categories, and adjust the lecture difficulty according to the student's academic ability.

    This course aims to help students understand a variety of social areas of Japan such as politics, economy, culture, history and life style, etc

    This course of Basic Japanese Ⅱ aims to enable students who have taken a Basic JapaneseⅠ to learn the basic structure of Japanese language, so they can communicate their ideas in Japanese properly. Especially this course will provide them with a number of chances to practice Japanese grammatical rules using vocabularies they learned.

    This lecture treats total Korean history internationally and help Koreans to have necessary knowledge and to establish their own identity in order to play in a global socity. This lecture is formed to assist people who study history for entering various government's organizations and large companies or Korean history cerification test.

Therefore, the aims of this lecture are to practice Japanese natural pronunciation and to improve with ability of Japanese listening with the various teaching materials in the language study training room. It will build the basics of smooth mutual communications with the Japanese.

    This course is to learn the historical development of modern Japanese society from 1868 to 1945 and various social and cultural phenomena. Following the understanding of the present age, students will develop a basic understanding of Japanese history, society, and culture in the modern period. This course aims to equip major students with a basic understanding of modern and contemporary Japanese society along with the 'understanding of modern Japan' learned in the first year course. And based on this, the foundation for deepening the understanding of modern and contemporary literature, history, ideology, and culture in the 3rd and 4th grade courses will be laid.

    INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL HUMANITIES
    The purpose of this course is to confirm the concept of digital humanities and contents and examine their developmental application in line with the current trend of changes in humanities research and learning methods. In addition, it is intended to stimulate interest in related fields in the future to promote new research activities. The content of the course is divided into four areas. First, the field of digital storytelling. Focusing on digital media, the concept of storytelling and its various communication forms and characteristics will be examined. Second, the field of digital language processing. An overview of the language processing process from corpus-based language analysis to text mining. Third, the humanities data mining and analysis field. Learn basic data collection and analysis techniques. Fourth, the field of electronic maps and digital mapping. Check the concept of GIS and review digital mapping through the combination of geographic information and humanities information.

    BUSINESS JAPANESE ON TOURISM
    This class, Japanese of Tourist and Interpretation is offered thought two sessions for a year, in spring and fall. According to each sessions, named Japanese of Tourist and Interpretation (1) and (2). For getting a job after graduation, Students study the geography, history, language and a business of accommodation in Japan.

    JAPANESE LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE (CAPSTONE DESIGN) (1)
    This course is designed for the junior and senior level students in major of Japanese Language and Literature both to understand theoretical knowledge and also to practice translation at the same time. The students will raise their major knowledge and application abilities needed to the jobs by translating Japanese media (literary works, movies, animations, local industries’ promotional materials, and so on) into Korean in this class.

    UNDERSTANDING OF DIGITAL JAPANOLOGY
    Facing the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution, the government is enhancing coding training in the compulsory education course. We are also witnessing a trend that the ability to collect and process digital data are requested in many corners of society. Against this backdrop, the class is aimed at getting all students from incoming freshmen to seniors, who are ‘digitalnatives,’ well-prepared to the digital-based society as well as providing an opportunity to dive into their major, Japanology, through learning the ability to collect humanities knowledge from Japan and make good use of it. In detail, the class is to make sure that students understand the Japanesel anguage in structural manner through analyzing massive amount of Japanese text and vocal corpus established by the National Institute for Japanese Languageand Linguistics by using Japanese data analysis tools such as ‘Shonagon’ and ‘Himawari’. In addition, student will learn how to use Python and Mecab so that they can collect and process data found in Japanese media and online platforms. By collecting, analyzing, and visualizing Japanese humanities knowledge by themes, students can have a chance to improve their overall understandings of the language, culture, society and history of Japan.

    Focusing on Japanized-Chinese letters as well as vocabulary, this course helps the students understand idiomatic expressions, four-character idomatic phrase due to cultural differences between Korea and Japan and use precise Japanized-Chinese letters.

    CROSS-CULTURAL EXPLORATION CAPSTONE DESIGN
    This online course is a practical joint-training course of Korean and Japanese students working together. In past ‘cross-cultural’ exercises, the students of each country tended to introduce and present their own culture from a one-sided point-of-view. However, this project is a much superior collaborative activity of joint research, corporative presentation between Korean and Japanese students, on the common crucial issues of ‘global warming’, ‘the widening gap between rich and poor’, ‘ecocide’, ‘energy development’, ‘multicultural society’ and so forth. How do they debate on these common crucial issues? How do they address the challenge? And then, what is the possibility for collaboration in order to solve such common issues in the world? The main purpose of this course is to think about and seek the panaceas together.

    COMPARISON BETWEEN THE JAPANESE AND KOREAN LANGUAGES
    This lecture is for individuals who speak Korean as a native language that are voluntarily learning Japanese. The aim of this class is to understand the Japanese language more effectively by utilizing all knowledge of the Korean language that we already know and understand on a native level. In this class, students can understand Japanese correctly by corresponding Japanese books into Korean books by translating them from Japanese through a group or an individual activities that are comprised of the 3 parts below. 1) The similarity between Japanese and Korean: Grammar (particles, auxiliary verbs, conjunctions, passiveness expressions, etc.), vocabulary (including kanji words, words of foreign origin, idioms, etc.), situations of usage (honorific, non-honorfic, etc.) 2) The differences between Japanese and Korean: Grammar (particles, auxiliary verbs, conjunctions, passiveness expressions, etc.), vocabulary (kanji words, words of foreign origin, idioms), situations of usage (honorific, non-honorific, etc.) 3) Analysis of Japanese misusage caused native language, and exploring the counterproposal.

    This course is designed to provide students with an opportunity to write about a variety of controversial issues in the field of Japanese education so that the students can enhance their writing competence, integrating critical, logical thinking, analytic ability, and reasoning power. In order to help students cope adequately with the Japanese essay writing task in the Exam for the License of Teahcers, this course presents a variety of theories and skills in the field of TESOL, which ultimately helps them to enrich their background knowledge. It also provides them with an opportunity to practice expressing their opinions logically and systematically on the basis of logic. In addition, this course deals with the development of a topic statement, discourse cohsion and coherence, and rhetorical structure, etc. Teaching methods employed in this course focus on the presentation and discussion of argumentative essays. The teacher should give relevant feedback on the essay writings.

    JAPANESE DEBATE
    Students will benefit with listening, speaking and critical thinking skills in this class. For this purpose, they have to learn the grammar, specialized vocabulary, etc. about the issues by online. And they are divided into two groups (the agreement side and the other side) in the off-line class, and debate about the issues that they already learned by online. In other words, cooperation and teamwork from other members of the group are demanded in this class. The skills that they can obtain from this class will help their interviews or presentations for jobs.
